The Process
From search to payment — here's exactly what happens
No surprises. No fine print. Just a clear, simple process to recover the money that belongs to you.
We search 49 million records
Start by searching your name, or explore your city's unclaimed property stats to see what's out there. Our smart search runs across the entire California State Controller's Office database instantly and finds matches a basic search misses. Most people are surprised by what we find.
You sign our fee agreement
When you find a match, you sign our fee agreement. This authorizes myMoneyCA to act as your registered investigator and initiate your claim with the State Controller's Office. Our fee is 10% of the recovered amount — paid only when you receive your money. Nothing upfront, ever.
We file your claim on your behalf
We file all documents with the SCO on your behalf. myMoneyCA prepares all required forms, pre-fills your SCO Claim Affirmation, and submits the complete claim package to the California State Controller’s Office as your registered investigator.
The SCO reviews your claim
The California State Controller's Office reviews all submitted claims. Simple cash claims may be processed in 30–60 days, but most claims take 3 to 6 months depending on complexity and SCO workload. Estate cases can take up to 12 months. We monitor your claim's progress and keep your dashboard updated every step of the way. You can check your status any time.
You receive your money
When the SCO approves your claim, they send two separate checks — one to you for 90% and one to myMoneyCA for our 10% fee. You never pay us directly. The state handles the split. That's it. Your money, back in your hands.
Common questions
What documents will I need?
Typically a government-issued photo ID, proof of Social Security Number, and documentation connecting you to the address on the property record. We guide you through exactly what's needed for your specific claim.
What if my claim is denied?
If the SCO denies your claim, you owe us nothing — our fee is success-only. We'll notify you of the denial, explain the SCO's reasoning, and if the denial can be appealed, we'll help you prepare and resubmit at no additional cost.
Why can't I just file myself?
You can — claimit.ca.gov is free. But filing yourself means navigating the SCO's complex forms alone. myMoneyCA prepares your forms and files your claim directly with the SCO on your behalf — as a registered California unclaimed property investigator. Plus our smart search catches matches that a basic name search misses.
What is the minimum claim amount?
We process claims for $25 and above. For amounts under $25, we direct you to the state's free portal at claimit.ca.gov.
What you need to do
Minimal effort on your end. We handle the complex parts while you stay in control of your sensitive information.
